Brownfields are abandoned, idle or underused commercial or industrial properties, where the expansion or redevelopment is hindered by real or perceived contamination. Brownfields vary in size, location, age, and past use -- they can be anything from a five-hundred acre automobile assembly plant to a small, abandoned corner gas station.
The City of Green Bay is actively working to reuse Brownfield sites. The City received a $400,000 grant from the US EPA to inventory, characterize, assess and conduct planning and community involvement activities to encourage revitalization of Brownfield sites. The grant work is focusing on commercial and industrial corridors along Webster and Velp Avenues, in the central business district and elsewhere within the city limits. The grant activities are scheduled to last through September 2010. Currently, environmental testing is on-going at various sites throughout the city.
