Looking ahead to 2011!
Fantastic Addition to Fisk Park
Have you heard the latest? Last fall, the Board was able to request and receive, through Alderman Chris Wery’s strong support, Federal funding (Community Development Block Grant monies), in the amount of $50,000 to add an outdoor pavilion to Fisk Park. The City Parks & Recreation Department will build it in 2011 on the concrete pad already installed west of the shelter and splash pads. The proposed design will have a craftsmen style that will aesthetically coordinate with the shelter.
Another Park Score!
Alderwoman Celestine Jeffreys notified association president Mary Stutleen that a particular park project did not evolve because half of the project cost being raised in private funds were not achieved. The president asked the Parks & Recreation Department if the $15,000 CDBG funds from this project could be used to enhance the outdoor pavilion. The Park Committee approved $10,000 of these monies to add masonry columns to the newly planned outdoor pavilion. Thank you Ald. Jeffreys!
Yet Another Score!
After the 2nd FANA Wine, Cheese & Chocolate Party in October 2009, the Board kicked around the idea of remodeling/upgrading the shelter to be able to use more square footage and electrical appliances in the shelter. At the time of the party, we found that nothing much had been done since the shelter was built around the 1920s/30s. However, one-third of the floor space was partially walled off as an office when the Police Department used the shelter in the early 2000s as the west side Community Police Center. At the request of the association, the Parks & Recreation Department kindly removed the partial wall, upgraded electrical, installed cabinets, cosmetically restored the fireplace, and painted the concrete floor. Stop by during one of our summer meetings to check it out for your events!
Fisk Park Pool Party!
For a 2009 Fisk Addition Neighborhood Association Event, the Board of Directors planned a free pool party at the Resch Aquatic Center for our neighborhood families. It was held on Saturday evening, August 1, 2009. One of our adjacent neighborhood association, Perkins Park, chose to participate with us. Although the weather was somewhat uncooperative at 70 degrees, those that showed up had a great time. Non-swimmers had the opportunity to mingle and meet people from the neighborhood. Free ice cream treats were donated by Walmart, along with chips & soda from the Perkins Park Neighborhood Association.
New ID Sign!
OURS IS UP! Our neighborhood ID sign was installed at Shawano & Woodlawn Avenues, which is actually the Community Police Center property. The sign’s theme comes from the “gem” of the neighborhood, namely, Fisk Park pool, so the colors reflect the blues of the water. Hoping soon to add something extra! Have ideas, call a board member!
Wine, Cheese & Chocolate Party
October 9, 2009
Neighbors numbering 45 gathered to clink glasses and tease their palates while attending the FANA’S 2ND WINE, CHEESE, & CHOCOLATE TASTING PARTY hosted by the Fisk Addition Neighborhood Association on Friday evening, October 9. Those in attendance were first met by a votive-lit walkway from curb to building. Inside was a warm, inviting hall decorated in an autumn theme. Four different wines were purchased from Captain’s Walk Winery. Captain’s Walk representative, Margaret Tripp, explained the types of grapes that wines are made from, and afterward, acted as wine maitre d’ for the evening. BelGioso supplied the cheeses while Beerntsen’s donated chocolate candies. Margaret infused attendees with her knowledge of how each wine complemented each chocolate. Scrumptious chocolate desserts were also served that included the ever-popular chocolate covered strawberries and raspberries, a rich devil’s food cake and French silk pie. The lively participants had a wonderful time! Door prizes recipients were Michael Amenson, Jim Genrich, Tony Grzybowski, Maria Jacques, Marilyn Lichon, Holly Pecard, Marlene Schmeda, and David Zack. Be sure to visit Captain’s Walk & Beernsten’s!
Plants Anyone?
If you have flowering plants you don’t want, would you mind donating them to Fisk Park? Prefer perennials, but annuals are fine, too. Contact Joy Glass at 497-7377 to make arrangements.
A "Green" Alternative
The City is encouraging residents to a "Green Alternative" which is chopping up moderate amounts of leaves with your lawnmower, thereby adding nutrients to your lawn.
