Historic Preservation Committee
Responsible for safeguarding the City's historic and cultural heritage, and the development of public support and the location and identification of historic structures and historic distrricts. The Commission consists of seven members including one Council member. Members serve a three year term.

Unmarked Sites

Astor House (1837-1857)

Location: SW corner of S. Adams St. & Mason St (Don A. Tilleman Bridge).
Known as “the most luxurious hotel west of New York” when it was opened by John Jacob Astor in 1837.
The Astor House was a destination throughout the region, and cost $20,000 when It was built in the town of
Astor (later Green Bay). In 1857 the hotel burned down, with wide speculated that arson was to blame.
