Chestnut Avenue Green Bay 11/05/10
At 3:39 on November 5th, 2010, the Green Bay Fire Department responded to a report of smoke and flames coming from 101 S. Chestnut Avenue which is a two story building with businesses on the 1st floor and 8 apartments on the 2nd floor. Arriving crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the upper level of building. Green Bay Firefighters rescued an occupant off of the roof of the building. Another building occupant was outside when we arrived as well.
One person was transported to the hospital for burns and the condition of that person is not known at this time. A total of more than 80 firefighters and 20 fire department vehicles responded which included the Green Bay Fire Department, Ashwaubenon Public Safety, Howard Fire, and the Bellevue Fire Department. Wisconsin Public Service, the Green Bay Police Department, and the Department of Public Works also assisted.
The Green Bay Fire Department Fire Marshal’s Office, in cooperation with the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, and the Department of Criminal Investigation, has determined the fire started in a void space that ran the length of the building and was likely burning for hours before anyone discovered it. The building is a total loss and the damages are expected to be in excess of $1,000,000. Fire crews were able to protect neighboring buildings from fire loss and damage.
