Fire Fighter Recruitment


Mission: To protect and educate our community, show compassion to all, and continue the honored tradition and dedication of the fire services.

The Department:
The Green Bay Fire Department is headed by a Chief with an Assistant Chief as second-in-command. The department is a full-service fire department providing the following services:

Fire Suppression
Fire Prevention Code Inspections
Public Fire Safety Education
Paramedic Ambulance Service
EMT Engine Companies
Fire Investigation
Hazardous Materials Response
Confined Space Rescue
Ice/Water Rescue
Miscellaneous public service upon request
The Green Bay Fire Department operates out of seven stations with the following companies and typical staffing levels:
Seven engines – staff of four
Three ambulances – staff of three
Three ladders – minimum staff of three
Two Battalion Chiefs

In addition to fire and EMS responses, companies perform in-service inspections, conduct educational programs, perform equipment and station maintenance, as well as participate in training.

The Green Bay Fire Department suppression crew works a modified California schedule (on/off/on/off/on/96 hours off) that averages 53 hours/week. Personnel receive an extra one day off every 54 calendar days.

Salary:
Starting salary for Fire Fighters is $1202.60 bi-weekly with a three year step progression to the top Fire Fighter rate of $2073.45 bi-weekly. Salary and benefits are covered by bargaining unit agreement and are subject to change. Fringe benefits include:

Staffing:
The department operates with two battalions (one East Side and one West Side). The total staffing for the two battalions of the Operations Division includes: 82 fire fighters, 39 engineers, 18 lieutenants, 24 captains and 6 battalion chiefs. The following support services are provided: 4 fire prevention personnel, 1 training officer, 1 EMS director, 2 mechanics, 2 clerical support, 1 assistant chief and 1 chief.

Training:
There are many training opportunities within the department. The department utilizes the new fire training center at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College. Specialized classes are provided in EMS, Hazmat, confined space and other areas. Several members of the department attend the National Fire Academy, 'Wisconsin Weekends' and other academy classes.

The Fire Department is currently in the process of certifying all personnel to Wisconsin State Standards. Newly-hired personnel typically receive recruit training of at least seven weeks. 

Recruitment:

Job Requirements: *
High school diploma or equivalent.
Associate degree in Fire Science.

Current EMT-Paramedic certification
Current certification as a Fire Fighter II by the State of Wisconsin or an IFSAC accredited agency.
Valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
Green Bay Fire Department Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) certification.

Please Note!  A CPAT certification must be obtained from the Green Bay Fire Department during the calendar year of the recruitment.  The 2010 registration deadline for CPAT is July 25, 2010.

oral interviews;
a background investigation;
pre-employment physical;
psychological assessment

Residency within the corporate city limits of Green Bay is required within 12 months of hire. This requirement may be subject to change in accordance with city ordinance.
