Mission: To provide effective and efficient law enforcement to the visitors and residents of the City of Green Bay.
The Department:
The Green Bay Police Department's structure includes three main divisions: Operations, Investigations and Support Services. The table of organization depends upon a strong middle management focus and for an increased level of communication within the department. The department also utilizes a competitive promotional process. The department structure allows for a variety of job opportunities. The structure also provides more opportunity and flexibility to change shifts and the department has a guaranteed staffing level.
Assignments:
The Green Bay Police Department provides all security for the Green Bay Packers home games, with a minimum of 80 officers assigned to each game. Officers also have the opportunity to perform grant-funded work on OWI enforcement patrols and speed waves. There are also state-funded projects, which include Cops in Shops.
Training:
The City of Green Bay Police Department is one of the best trained departments in the state. Training facilities include an indoor range and an outdoor range featuring a live shoot house. Officers also utilize a local Cinetronic range for skill enhancement. New Green Bay Police Officers are initially trained and evaluated through the guidelines of a nationally acclaimed FTO program and continue to receive specialty training over and above state mandated levels throughout their career.
Equipment:
The Green Bay Police Department boasts state-of-the-art equipment in all divisions. The Photo/Ident area includes Compu-Capture, digital photography and electronic fingerprinting. The fitness center, available to all department employees, was made possible by donations from area businesses, including the Green Bay Packers. All squads are being equipped with a laptop, stop sticks and computer-assisted dispatch.
Recruitment:
The City Human Resources Department conducts recruitments as needed to establish an eligibility list to fill vacancies. Applications are only accepted at the time the recruitment is being conducted. The recruitment process includes a written test, interview with a police department panel, a physical abilities test and an interview with the Police & Fire Commission. Once candidates are placed on the eligibility list, a thorough police background, psychological assessment, physical exam and polygraph are also required before a candidate is hired.
Qualified candidates must be at least 18 years of age and possess an Associates degree in Police Science or a Bachelor's degree from a college or university in a related field. The candidate must also be a citizen of the United States with no felony convictions, no domestic violence convictions, and an excellent driving record.
