J. H. M. Wigman was born in Amsterdam, Holland, on August 15, 1835. He came to the United States with a brother, Henry, when he was thirteen years old. They lived in Little Chute, WI, for a few years, where a Holland settlement was established and then went to Bay Settlement.
Mr. Wigman married Matilda Lyannoise of Bay Settlement in 1856, and he and his wife went to Appleton, WI to live. They had one son and six daughters.
When in Appleton, Mr. Wigman and T. R. Hood formed a law partnership in 1860 and remained in Appleton until 1870 when they moved to Green Bay. The partnership was dissolved in 1887, and Mr. Wigman and P. H. Martin went into the practice of law under the name Wigman & Martin. Other members of the Martin family joined the firm in later years and Mr. Wigman withdrew from the firm in 1913. He did not retire from practice until 1917. Mr. Wigman was the oldest member of the Brown County Bar Association and for many years its president. He practiced law for a record 57 years.
He was mayor of Green Bay in 1882.
After the death of his first wife, Mr. Wigman married Jennie Meagher of Green Bay in 1876.
He died at 8:30 the morning of January 31, 1920 at his home. His death was due to diabetes following a lingering illness at the age of 84.
