Greater Green Bay Sustainable Task Force Meeting

December 13, 2006, 2:00 p.m.

City Hall, Room 604

Members Present:  Jeff DeLaune, Gary Delveaux, Ian Griffiths, Rich Krieg, Derek Lord, Andre Jacque, Bill Lockery, Annette Weissbach, John Miller, Mayor Jim Schmitt, Rob Strong

Gary Delveaux called the meeting to order at 2:00 p.m. A draft of the committee report was distributed.

Andre Jacque reviewed the draft report and changes he had made to the subcommittee reports.  He asked for feedback from Task Force members by next Wednesday.  Discussion ensued regarding suggestions for the cover photo.  Suggestions included Baird Creek, a path in the woods, a young person painting a storm water stencil, a photo of the Farmers Market, a photo of a compact fluorescent light bulb or a water photo.  R. Krieg suggested a collage of four photos, which was approved by the members.

Andre continued review of the draft document and fielded questions, suggestions, and recommendations.  Suggestions included incorporating into the report the proposed University of Wisconsin tuition free program, meant to attract and retain young professionals who attend college in Wisconsin, and also to attract pro-athletes into making Green Bay their home.  Discussion surrounded the website and logo.  The idea of a logo design contest in the high schools was suggested, to include marketing students.  Website discussion included purchasing a domain name and what the website would be named, as well as the name for the report.  Lengthy discussion regarding the name “Greener” Green Bay or “Sustainable” Green Bay, with the group tentatively agreeing on the report being titled “Sustainable Green Bay’s Initial Report to Mayor Jim Schmitt”.  It was agreed that the website address should not be too long with the suggestion of “green-bay.sgb.org” if this is not already taken.

Andre indicated that he needs more input from the committees to assist him in writing the Implementation/Strategy section.  He will send an email requesting specific information or comments after he has a draft of that section.  Question arose regarding the inclusion of an Education/Marketing section?  Andre stated that he will add a tip of the week.  Mayor Schmitt said he and Andre met earlier this week with Paul Linzmeyer of Bay Towel and Fred Schnook of Foth and Van Dyke (former one term Mayor of Ashland, WI) who discussed sustainability and shared a copy of the Sustainable Chequamegon Initiative Strategic Plan 2006 – 2011.  The Mayor stated that Green Bay may partner with this group to host an expert speaker on sustainability.  A copy of Green Bay’s draft report will be sent to Mr. Linzmeyer and Mr. Schnook.

It was agreed that the committee needs time to review and digest the draft report.  G. Delveaux asked members to forward their comments to Andre by Wednesday, December 20th.  An email will be sent to all members along with an electronic copy of the report.  The next meeting will be held on Thursday, January 11, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. in Room 604 of City Hall.  An updated draft will be reviewed at this meeting.

Respectfully submitted,
