Introductions were made and new members Matthew Norem of Coldwell Bankers Realtors and Scott Wigger, Discovery Energy Consultants were welcomed. Prioritize and vote on projects Mr. Delveaux said the group would be voting on projects that were identified at the last meeting and reminded members that the projects must have the three components, environmental, economic, and social and must have volunteers to work on them as well as someone to chair the project. He stated that each person who wishes to speak to a project will be allowed 30 seconds to a minute to share their thoughts. He suggested members voting on their first, second and third choice for large projects and small projects and explained the distinction between large and small projects. R. Krieg reported that a group has been formed to focus on food, to encourage buying local and eating green. S. Stokes will join this group and suggested working with the school district to get them to buy local and to involve the students. D. Lindgren said she spent 30 years in Maine and shared a copy of a telephone book from a community there, which lists recycling information relative to hours, location, phone number, etc. for the local communities. She would like to see this information included in our local phone book and volunteered to work with phone book companies in our area. Deb also mentioned a recent project she was involved in where recycled metal siding paid for the building materials and said she had to research information about where to bring other recycled materials and said this would be very helpful information for builders and citizens. G. Delveaux reviewed the Team HEAT program which is volunteers helping low income people with insulation and other energy saving measures in their homes. He said this program will go forward through Wisconsin Public Service and the Task Force is welcome to team with them. He stated that this is part of Make A Difference Day. R. Krieg said using less plastic (bottles and bags) would be a great project for someone and added that some cities have banned plastic bags as well as some countries. K. Kohlbeck shared a prototype of a reusable bag that she and N. Nabak came up with and would like to find a local cottage industry to make the bags and would like to see them used for produce at the Farmers Market. She would like market vendors to get away from using plastic bags. Karen mentioned a program in Madison called Madison Rah where different organizations get together and plan to lower the footprint for local events and have recycle bins. She would like to see Green Bay tie in with a green team idea to use reusable, not plastic. Suggestion was made to remove bottled water from the vending machines in city hall and replace it with a water cooler. G. Delveaux said the CFL challenge was very successful but J. DeLaune who chaired the event and Luann Rudolph who spent many hours on the project are no longer available. Suggestion that if this project is repeated, that it would be grown and geared toward low income residents. Tap Project and Bottleless Water - K. Biedermann was excited about this project but was not in attendance. K. Kohlbeck said an idea was to encourage restaurants to use bottleless water. Rich believed the Mayor as part of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, could issue an order that Green Bay would no longer buy bottled water and it would no longer be allowed at city events. He stated that 60 other Mayors have done this. Andre said the only sponsored city event is the July 4th event. He said that before something could become a law, it would need to go through a few steps. Business/Marketing Plan N. Nabak said the article on social norms forwarded by K. Kohlbeck was very informative and said this is the expected behavior, and we are already doing many of these things in Green Bay. She expressed concern that some projects are getting a negative slant from the media and said we need to keep the positive focus such as were doing the green bike program like other communities. Annette suggested having a reporter from the Press-Gazette join the Task Force and give a positive slant on the projects. Andre stated that the City reporter from the Press-Gazette, Paul Srubas is generally supportive of Sustainable Green Bay Task Force and the green bike program and bikes to work himself. He added that one concern with having a reporter on the committee would be that information that we are not prepared to have out in the public, may get out. Focus on City Hall Building and the ecological footprint C. Osman said this is critical and we need to get the word out about things like the energy saving initiatives the city is doing through Honeywell. Suggestion to have a student research the information, with Andre stating that Derek said we already have the data, and we have access to it. Andre said the city is on phase 3 with Honeywell and has been proactive in energy cost savings. Discussion on LEED projects in the city and its not required through city code that LEED building be utilized but is encouraged. R. Krieg talked about the new Federal Court House that is proposed and would like to see that be a LEED building. Andre suggested writing to our congressmen. EcoDog R. Wery said this is a personal website project of hers and said she does one ecological thing each month. She said there are two other Eco Dog websites out there. Comments that Lori Neverman of Fox 11 does a lot of environmental things. Crystal discussed greening downtown events and said Tina Quigley has done a great job in greening Artstreet and recently got 100 clear, plastic recycle bins and she is working with other organizations to use these at other events. Crystal thought forming a committee regarding greening events would be a good idea and said Tina may be willing to work on such a committee, but could not speak for her. Andre stated that Tina is looking at composting, which may be a year away and said she is looking at making Artstreet a no waste event. Karen suggested calling Madison Rah to get their ideas for greening events. Gary and Ian suggested voting on large projects and anyone wanting to assume a small project, go ahead and do them and report their progress to the committee. Gary reviewed emails from members who were not able to attend. Doug Meek emailed that he would be interested in chairing the Home Energy Audit project and it would require limited Task Force involvement. Mark Foht emailed his priorities as Recycling Building Materials, Bottless Water, CFL Challenge, Home Energy Audits, Partner with the Packers and green standards in TIF Policy. Andre said the Mayor wanted to promote a project involving Get Healthy Green Bay, a wellness project we could maybe do in tandem with the water bottles and the green bike project, take your water bottle and head out on the trail. After further discussion, the following three large projects were identified: Food Nancy, Rich and Karen are jointly co-chairing this committee City Hall building and city leading by example Ecological footprint Andre will work on this, (Derek) and will be a contact for the marketing committee. Business/Marketing Plan Get existing information to more people --Lisa Evenson will chair this project. Scott will talk to the Ad Fed and will contact Joe at Imaginasium about doing some pro bono work. Nancy and Crystal agreed to be part of this committee. Crystal suggested making the most of our website. Debbie Lindgren will do the telephone book herself as a small project. Andre would like to see the group take on the CFL challenge next year and maybe every other year. Nancy said we need to get the word out that just by changing one light bulb in their home would result in measurable energy savings. Comment made that a lot of the ground work was done with last years challenge, so the next time should go more smoothly. Crystal mentioned having a marketing campaign about buying the bulbs in local stores and encouraging hardware stores to sell and give an award to the store selling the most bulbs. Annette said Erik Hoyer is addressing the Neighborhood Associations on August 7th and suggested having him get information out about CFLs and sharing facts about the success of last years challenge. Matt Norem commented that we have to get the consumer interested which is done through regular communication and education and said ideas like plant a tree to help cool your house would be helpful. Annette suggested all Task Force members utilizing whatever organizations they are involved in, and help to spread the word, such as the Chamber of Commerce. Ian said there are eco stories all around, with the high gas prices and we all need to keep talking about the Task Force and sustainability and encourage others to get involved. Annette said at the State level they are looking at grants for green demolition and recycling. The Restore in Appleton was discussed and getting such a store here. They re-use demolished building materials, which Crystal said NeighborWorks Green Bay does the same thing in blighted properties and reuse whatever materials they can in other homes. Nancy reported that she is with Ecolution, Inc. and the Transportation Committee met with the Mayor and will be holding a Transportation Summit on November 12th at the KI Convention Center. She said they will have big exhibits, scooters, electric cars and may have Ed Begley, Jr. as a speaker. They will bring in a technical peak oil expert and will have breakout sessions. They will cover alternative transportation in one breakout and will be identifying the market at their next meeting. They may have breakouts regarding a natural step took kit for another breakout and are expecting to have 400 people. They will have metro system representatives to tell people how to get from one destination to another. Nancy said one of their goals is to keep employee retention in New North. Crystal is talking to large employers in Howard who are not part of the metro system about having shuttle systems. Nancy said the City is very supportive of this summit and they are hoping to have an essay contest on transportation with 8th through 12th graders and have Paul Linzmeyer and Ed Begley go to schools and talk about transportation. Crystal shared that Schreiber Foods is looking for ways to save their employees money, with many of their employees coming from the Fox Valley. She said at a recent meeting with various agencies, and Schreiber, discussion went well for an intercommunity shuttle system. Ian suggested writing letters to organizations in support of what they are already doing and give them credit. Renee stated that Earth Day was started in Wisconsin and is now all over the world, therefore Wisconsin should be a leader in sustainability. Schedule next meeting. The next meeting of the Task Force will be held on Thursday, August 28th at 3:00 pm in Room 604 of City Hall.
