Approval of minutes from the October 15, 2009 meeting Lisa moved to approve, Molly seconded, motion carried. Introductions were made Update Mission/Vision Nic gave a brief overview stating that they had met two or three times since the last meeting to try to make the mission and vision more accurately reflect what the group was trying to do. He said they made a few changes to the Mission Statement and a couple of additions to the core values. He said they spent more time on the vision statement and broke it out into two parts, one a narrative description of what they see as the future state of things as they see it. He added that they didnt want to lose all of the detail so the bullet points remain. He asked for input and feedback on the changes. Kevin commented on the Mission statement inquiring if we were going to develop and champion specific policies and make recommendations to our local government to say that we are not only trying to educate others but are trying to get some concrete things done as well. Nic responded that this is a good point that we want to cover under educate and influence and will make note of that thought. Ned commented that the mission is pretty long; Karen agreed stating that in a workshop she attended, they said you should be able to cover in three short thoughts. Nic said the Mission expanded and contracted several times since the last meeting. Karen mentioned having a tag line. Jennifer said the Village of Howard is working on having a motto under the logo and thought a tagline would be a good idea. Brief discussion on a name change for the group, with Nic commenting that the Mayor would need to be agreeable to a name. The overall thought was that the Mission looked good. Nic moved on to the Vision Statement. Dan Roarty commented that he applauded the reference to government using 21st century accounting practices and believed it implied total accounting for all costs to a particular item. Accounting referred to when you do a cost benefit more life cycle costs and said at this point it doesnt exist in a sense. Discussion on the save money piece with the comment rather than government cutting administrative costs, government should be more cost effective or some other word or term that will lead to something that seems more comprehensive. Nic said the focus will be more city focus from the point that neighboring communities have their own efforts and said we would collaborate with other units of government. Dan commented if sustainability suggests and implies a greater opportunity for a regional outlook, we have now isolated it to a single community. He suggested keeping this on the table for continued discussion. Nic responded that he believes that thought will not go away and someone commented that you have to limit the scope somewhere. Dan commented that it often is limited by who is providing the money. Ned commented on trees in the urban environment and would like to include native species, and not just trees wildflowers, others plants, etc. Derek asked about the mass transit comment to the downtown is there a specific reason for just downtown? It should address the other communities, and the rest of Green Bay as a whole. Karen mentioned that she wanted to comment about transportation and the inability to get to jobs. Strategic objectives Nic asked for feedback on this section. Molly asked what the strategy for implementation of the objectives would be Nic mentioned that this would be the next step. Making sure that the organizational structure lines up with the mission/vision and then how these projects fit with the committees. Molly mentioned that it is tough to judge until we know how they would be implemented. Nic mentioned that we are loosely holding onto a pot of $1 million, a portion would go to a staff person, the rest of the funds will be allocated to the rest of the community, businesses and residential. The other piece of this puzzle is the changing role of this body the Sustainable Green Bay Committee. The possibility of attracting more people to the effort to do more of the work that we want to carry out. Josh would like this to be an objective great we have a new website, but if no one knows about it, what good does it do? The Committee is on Facebook, we have a group that John Miller oversees it. Lisa will check with John to see if he would like to continue to maintain the Facebook page. The Communications committee also has ideas for this page. The committee further discussed the changes that they would like to see in the document (see document). Dan cautioned that we may want to consider the repercussions of putting too much specificity in the document could it turn away volunteers, etc. Ned asked if anyone would want to join up with the Green Committee at the District he will send out an email. Molly posed the idea of an implementation process for projects/ideas. A process to take and initiative from an idea through to implementation including the steps for fundraising, etc. Kevin asked if an annual report has been completed or would this be something that we should also do. Derek mentioned that there was a summary of accomplishments in 07 & 08. Committee Reports Local Foods Karen updated the committee on a Farm to school initiative at the UW-Extension. There was good turn out. Earlier this week, a hunger and homeless event, tonight the Urban Frog is hosting a video, and there will also be a showing of Food Inc. in Menasha. Building Committee Tom was not present, but he is still working on the committee structure. Marketing Lisa mentioned that they have been working on the website, have talked about a monthly blog written by a high school student, a new logo and tagline were brought up today this is something the committee can also look into. Improving City hall Derek gave an update on the EECBG grant awarded 1.3M. The plan is to hire a coordinator for 1 or maybe 2 years, the City is currently looking at proposals for an energy audit including green house gases, etc. These projects will then be prioritized based on the audit. The other component is a residential energy audit program. It would be an additional rebate for homeowners. An energy audit is $300 and this program along with a program through FOE would bring it to $100 for the resident. If the resident completes the recommendations the program would then provide an additional $100 making the cost to the resident $0. A strategy has to be submitted by the end of December. If there are any questions or if anyone has any input contact Derek. Community Events Crystal mentioned that she and Tina spoke about La Vida Local and the planning committee is going to get started soon. She wanted to make sure the Committee was still interested in partnering and Tina will be in touch with Paul soon to further discuss. Legislative Update Nic attended a symposium in Southeast WI regarding various developments. One of the topics was the Task Force on Global Warming now various think tanks are starting to put out reports of how this would impact the various sectors regarding jobs, etc. The legislature will take up this topic in the next month or so, we arent sure how real this is and what the timeline is. Paul L. gave a little of the background of the Task Force on Global Warming. We would like to get a presentation from some people on this effort, so that we as a Task Force are able to weigh in on potential legislation. One of the things that will be looked at for next year is a committee on policy to help others understand policy from the science vs. ideology. We dont want this to become an argument over Climate Change what we would rather do is look at mitigation and adaptation. Paul wanted to go back to the Mission/Vision for a second people felt the document was good to go. Something to start getting out on the website, etc. Paul mentioned that all the subcommittees and any new subcommittees will need to start structuring around this. Update on Village of Howard Single Stream Program Jennifer gave an update on the Go Green Save Green basically, in mid August Howard went to the single stream program for recycling and also went to the larger capacity bins. Analyzing Aug October. There is a difference of about 50,000 tons. Recycling is 35% of the Villages waste, Jennifer hopes to bring this up again with more information in the future. Howard is working on another program called went green saved green. Howard businesses will be able to submit green practices and each business that submits projects deemed appropriate will receive a sticker that has a marketing message regarding the business as well as the go green save green group. Another component of the program will be a green business of the year, which will be chosen from the applications that are submitted by the above mentioned program. Paul asked if Jennifer compared to other communities. He also asked if they did any marketing of recycling prior. Suggested new meeting times and dates After brief discussion it was decided to continue holding the meetings on the third Thursday of the month at 3:00 pm. Subcommittee Commitments This item was discussed with the Mission and Vision Statements. The meeting adjourned with no further discussion 01 !
